The Ukrainian Language and Culture Centre at Alecu Russo State University of Bălți (USARB) will be modernised with financial support from People in Need Moldova. The renovation is a joint initiative of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Moldova and People in Need Moldova. It will include refurbishment of the premises, provision of modern furniture, and advanced technical equipment adapted to current educational and cultural needs. All expenses will be covered from the SOS Ukraine appeal—a People in Need appeal established through the generous donations of Czech citizens.

“On this symbolic day, we are pleased to announce the launch of this important initiative for Ukrainians for whom Moldova has become a place of refuge. It reaffirms our commitment to stand with Ukraine and its people. While some strive to question Ukraine’s cultural identity, we choose to support the strengthening and promotion of its authentic values,”
said Rafal Chibowski, Country Director, People in Need Moldova.

The Ukrainian Language and Culture Centre is an academic and cultural platform for students, teachers, and researchers. In addition to its scientific and educational activities, it facilitates cooperation between USARB and leading universities in Ukraine.

“The modernisation represents an important contribution to guaranteeing the Ukrainian community’s right to education in their mother tongue and to strengthening the humanitarian dimension of the Ukrainian–Moldovan partnership. I express my sincere gratitude to People in Need Moldova for its continuous support to Ukraine and the Ukrainian community in the Republic of Moldova. We see this initiative as an investment in our shared European space of values, in academic mobility, and in the long-term development of human connections between our states,”
stated Paun Rohovei, Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Moldova.

The centre hosts theoretical and practical classes, international scientific conferences, round tables, seminars, and cultural-educational events. It also includes a library of Ukrainian literature accessible to all interested individuals.

“A modernised centre will allow us to develop and expand future activities and will contribute to attracting a new generation of young people to our shared European path, and to the democratic values of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine,”
– Diana Ignatenco, Head of the Ukrainian Language and Culture Centre at USARB.

Note: Alecu Russo State University of Bălți is the only higher education institution in the Republic of Moldova that provides initial training and professional development for teachers of Ukrainian language and literature. Most Ukrainian language and literature teachers in Moldovan schools are USARB graduates, underlining the university’s essential role in preserving and promoting Ukrainian linguistic and cultural heritage.
