The inauguration event brought together the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Moldova, Paun Rohovei, representatives of People in Need Moldova, the university leadership, faculty members, and students. Participants had the opportunity to visit the renovated premises and discuss the Center’s role in promoting the Ukrainian language and culture.

The Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Moldova, Paun Rohovei, emphasized that the inauguration of the modernized Center represents an important step in strengthening the Ukrainian cultural and educational presence in the Republic of Moldova, particularly in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“This project carries special significance in supporting Ukrainian linguistic and cultural identity, as well as in deepening bilateral academic cooperation. We are grateful to the Czech people for their solidarity expressed through the SOS Ukraine Fund, as well as to People in Need Moldova for their continued support to Ukraine and its citizens,” the Ambassador stated.

The modernization included a full renovation of the premises, equipping the Center with modern furniture and technical equipment tailored to current educational and cultural needs.

“For us at People in Need, this project reaffirms our commitment to stand with Ukraine and its people — whether those who remain at home or those who have found refuge here in the Republic of Moldova. In addition to our humanitarian programs, socio-economic integration efforts, and support for access to education for refugee children, we also invest in culture, values, and identity. At a time when these are sometimes challenged, we choose to support, protect, and promote them,” said Nino Karanadze, Program Manager at People in Need Moldova.

The Ukrainian Language and Culture Center serves as a space for courses, conferences, seminars, and cultural-educational events, and is also open to the public through its Ukrainian literature library. In its modernized form, the Center will continue to function as an academic and cultural platform for students, professors, and researchers, while facilitating international cooperation between the university and leading institutions in Ukraine.

“The modernization of this space allows us to expand our educational and cultural activities and to attract a new generation of students interested in the Ukrainian language and culture, united by European values and guided by a shared European path,” emphasized Diana Ignatenco, Head of the Ukrainian Language and Culture Center.
Alecu Russo State University of Bălți is the only higher education institution in the Republic of Moldova that provides training and professional development for teachers of the Ukrainian language and literature. Most Ukrainian language teachers in Moldova’s schools are graduates of this university, highlighting its essential role in preserving and promoting Ukrainian linguistic and cultural heritage.
